Crushing theory is refers to the basic theory of guiding the structure design of crusher. The theory is mainly focus on the research on the factors which affecting the energy consumption during the process of crushing, and ensure the power when crushing material by external force.

When the material is crushed, first of all, the material cracks along the most vulnerable part which is also the side of the natural fractures just like natural cracks, different mineral points. The vulnerable parts in the crushed fragment will reduce. With the constant operation of crushing process, vulnerable points and sides will gradually disappear; with the reduction of material granularity, the material become harder and harder. Hence when crush smaller material, the energy consumption is larger, that's reason why mining industry praise "more crushing and less grinding" in recent years.

Due to the complexity of crushing process, there are many factors which are related with energy consumption, such as structural physical properties of ore, the shape of ore, size, ambient temperature and crushing pattern. Therefore, the current crushing theory has certain limitations because they cannot explain the essence of crusher to be crushed completely. The research on the power dissipation of crusher may be traced to thousands of years ago, but it is considered as the large-scale social behavior and ascended to a height of the theory after the world's first industrial Revolution. In 1867, the scholars LEITINGGEER raised a new concept—crushing theory. It reveals the inner relationship between the state of crushing material and energy consumption by virtue of quantitative method, which play its guiding role in the field of crushing material. Later, more scholars dedicated to research on this area and also made many important practical application achievements such as several classical crushing theories.
